Visitors arriving at The National Wallace Monument
will be able to enjoy totally new facilities in 2009 following the
completion of a major redevelopment project in the area at the base
of The Abbey Craig, the rocky crag on which the famous tower was
built over 140 years ago to commemorate the life of the Scottish
patriot and martyr Sir William Wallace.
Designed specifically to enhance the visitor experience at The
Monument, the project has involved the construction of a striking
new reception building, incorporating a ticket sales desk, retail
area, and the spacious new 50-seat Legends Coffee House,
providing panoramic views towards The Abbey Craig and The Monument
itself. The layout of the Car Park area has also being re-configured
to ensure that adequate space is available for all visitors arriving
at The Monument, especially during the busiest months of the summer
season.
Legends Coffee House is a facility which is available for everyone
to enjoy, for visitors to The Monument, for walkers who come to
explore the woodlands, and for anyone who wants to just come and
relax with a coffee and take in the wonderful views towards The
Abbey Craig.
In addition to the development of the new reception building, extensive
work has been carried out on The Abbey Craig itself to improve access
to the woodlands which surround The Monument. This work has been
undertaken as part of The ‘Woodlands In and Around Towns’
initiative, a programme being implemented by Forestry Commission
Scotland with the objective of improving quality of life in towns
and cities across Scotland by creating new woodland, bringing neglected
woodland into active management, and working with people to help
them use their local woodland.
