Abbey Craig Dig

Abbey Craig Dig 2018On Friday 7th September the Abbey Craig archaeological excavation discovered the rampart of a 1,500 year old hill fort and some vitrified stones.

The excavation site on the approach to The National Wallace Monument provides evidence that there was a fort on the hill around 500AD which was later destroyed by fire. The fire which burned at over 1,000 degrees centigrade melted the stones so that they became fused together, this is known as a vitrified fort.

The stones will now be subject to radiocarbon dating tests, to help in developing a better understanding of these important fortifications.
