2019 – A Landmark Year

8th Jan 2019

2019 is going to be an unforgettable year for us as we mark the Monument’s 150th anniversary with the complete refurbishment of the interior exhibition galleries and a vastly expanded programme of events.

The National Wallace Monument first opened to the public in 1869 and since then we have welcomed millions of visitors who have come to discover the story of William Wallace, Scotland’s National Hero.

Expanded Programme of Events

This year visitors can enjoy a variety of events, from our new spring and autumn lecture programme with guest speakers, to family friendly activities every day in July and August. All this is in addition to the already highly popular performances from costumed actors. In total there will be 150 days of special events in 2019, with the next ones taking place over the February school holiday week.

Upcoming events

In September the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Monument and the 722nd anniversary of the Battle of Stirling Bridge will be marked with a special evening spectacle entitled ‘Wallace 150’ on Wednesday 11th September. This will be followed by ‘Wallace Wha Hae!’, our community festival in the grounds of Wallace High School on Saturday 14th September.

To allow for the refurbishment of the interior exhibition galleries, we will be closing the Monument temporarily from Monday 18th February 2019, re-opening again to the public in mid-to-late April.

Look out for more information on our upcoming events and the new and improved exhibition displays coming soon!
